Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
