New research suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
