Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
