The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
