Approximately fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then found multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state initial examinations indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
