At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
